Kirkland Dog Bed Review

A Kirkland dog bed review? Does the name sound familiar, but you just can’t place it? If you’re a Costco member, you might have plenty of items in your refrigerator with Kirkland branding. That’s because it’s the warehouse giant’s private-label brand.

You probably won’t come across too many Kirkland dog beds in your nearest warehouse. But Costco has an entire online collection that covers the gamut. In fact, there are so many styles and colors that we had to take a closer look.

So, we asked our cherished fur baby, Scruff, to do some sleep and durability testing of Kirkland’s Nest Bed. Then, we handled the rest to bring you a thorough and impartial Kirkland dog review. We’ll fill you in on everything from orthopedic beds to the snuggliest of options for puppies and small breeds.

Oh, and you don’t need to buy these in bulk!

Kirkland Dog Bed

  • Variety of styles from orthopedic to cuddlers
  • The upholstery-grade fabric holds up to scratching and biting
  • Machine washable
  • Stylish patterns and colors to complement your décor
  • Pressure point relief models
  • Ideal for small to medium dogs
  • Customer satisfaction return policy
  • Loyal customers
  • Purchase online but return to any Costco warehouse

  • Some assembly required (except mattress-style)
  • Lack of options for larger breeds

When conducting our Kirkland dog bed review, the first thing we noticed was the lack of options for larger breeds. While we found a 42” round mattress-style bed that could do the trick, many other brands provide 48” or even 54” models.

However, except for the small dog models, you’ll find that these beds are pretty durable. They feature sturdy bolsters and mattresses that bounce right back. The fabric is extra strong to withstand scratching and biting. That is unless you have a super determined doggo who really wants to know what’s inside that bed.

What Dogs This Bed is Best For

There are beds that are perfect for all kinds of dogs, as you’ll find cuddlers, couches, and bolster models. But if you have a Great Dane, Labrador, or other bigger pup, it might be challenging to find one that’ll work.

Costco might be known for big-package items, but it’s the opposite with its line of dog beds. You might get lucky, as the collection changes frequently. But when we conducted our Kirkland dog bed review, the largest ones we found were the 40” pillow top orthopedics and 42” rounds.

These products are designed more for small to medium breeds, and we emphasize small. The cuddlers and nest beds are ideal for dogs in the 10 lb. range. There’s also a sofa bed designed specifically for the little ones with 20” x 25” overall dimensions and an even smaller sleeping space.

Kirkland Dog Bed Review – Table of Contents

We might not be overly excited about the size availability for Kirkland Signature dog beds, but we are impressed with their quality. Except for the most petite models, you’ll find durable construction with supportive mattresses.

Kirkland dog bed features include:

  • Memory foam
  • Upholstery-grade fabric
  • Covered zippers
  • Heavy-duty YKK zippers
  • Removable, machine washable covers
  • Stylish colors and patterns
  • Orthopedic options for pups who need extra support
  • Substantial mattresses – some dual-layered models

Kirkland dog beds are priced appropriately for their features. They’re medium-range beds that should last quite a while. But they’re not entirely chew-proof, and you get more bang for your buck with the larger models, as they’re sturdier and much more supportive than the cuddlers.

Dog Test – Scruff’s Opinion

dog bed expert, dog bed reviews, dog bed reviewer

When Mom and Dad asked me to test another new bed, I wasn’t all that excited. But when they showed me my new nest bed from Costsco, everything changed.

I usually get a mattress or a bed that looks like the family sofa. But this Kirkland nest bed was designed just for me. It’s like a big bowl lined with the softest pillow.

While I wouldn’t go as far as saying it’s my favorite bed of all time, it’s one of the most comfortable. I’m happy to be just a little guy, though. If I were much bigger, I don’t think I would fit because there’s not a lot of room to move around.

Sizes and Options

Before we get into the specifics of various Kirkland dog bed options, we want to share a few things that should be helpful before you decide whether or not to purchase.

  • Availability changes frequently
  • There are way more online than in-warehouse options
  • Some assembly might be required
  • Products aren’t available in multiple sizes

Let’s say that you pull up the Costco website, scroll through Kirkland dog beds, and pick one out today. By tomorrow, it could be gone, as In-stock options change all the time. So, if you find one, scoop it up.

One Size Per Style

The other thing we want to point out is that shopping is slightly different than you’ll find with other retailers. Most stores have a simple formula where you pick out a style and have designated size options. That’s not the case with Costco and its dog bed collection.

The products we’re about to describe each come in one size only. For example, if you opt for a hexagon cuddler, it’s 25” in diameter, period. You won’t find a cuddler in 30” or another size.

Kirkland Signature Round Orthopedic Napper 40x8 Brown Herringbone

Five Types of Kirkland Dog Beds

  1. Mattress-Style
  2. L-Shaped
  3. Sofa-Style
  4. Nest Beds
  5. Cuddlers

There are two versions of Kirkland Signature’s mattress-style dog bed.

  • Pillow Top Orthopedic – 36” x 40”
  • 42” Round

This particular collection is more about the mattress and less about the color choices of taupe, tan, and beige. Either bed is excellent for most dogs, including those that need some extra support.

The pillow top has a base of orthopedic memory foam with cooling gel and a fiber-filled topper. Customer reviews are higher for the round bed, though, and we agree. It’s a more attractive bed with a patterned gusset and gives your pup more room to roll around. However, the pillow-top is a bit more supportive.

Kirkland’s Mattress-style dog beds are the most expensive of the bunch.

When we refer to an L-shaped bed, we’re talking about a rectangular mattress with two bolsters or sides that connect and form an L.

The Kirkland version is called a Medium Bolster Bed, and it’s 28” x 36” with a foam base and memory foam topper. Color options include navy plaid and brown embossed.

From two bolsters to three, Kirkland offers two sofa-style dog beds in addition to the L-shaped. They’re like miniature couches with a back and two sides.

  • Tailored Dog Couch Bed – 28” x 36” in your choice of colors (cream, tan, brown, gray, blue pattern)
  • Small Dog Sofa Bed – 20” x 25” in brown

These beds have an orthopedic foam base. Bolsters on the small version are softer and have more cushioning.

We particularly like the gray and tan tailored versions as they have dark patches on the front, reminiscent of elbow patch sweaters.

Nest Beds

The Kirkland Nest Bed is our favorite, and other customers agree. It’s the highest-rated model, and that could be because it’s one-of-a-kind. You won’t find nest dog beds everywhere, and they’re a treat for smaller breeds.

Imagine a round bed with walls, and both the interior walls and bottom are cushioned (maybe like a rubber room?). Pups find it a lot of fun as they can hide in there or sleep on a cloud.

The Nest Bed is blue, only 24” in diameter, half of which is devoted to a pillow lining. Not only is it washable like the other Kirkland dog beds, but the pillow is removable and reversible.

Whereas Nest Beds are a rare find, cuddlers are everywhere. While they’re typically donut-shaped, the Kirkland model is hexagonal. It’s 25” in diameter with a foam base and gel memory foam topper.

The surrounding walls are softer than the sofa-style beds and provide pressure point relief for smaller breeds.

We didn’t find much wrong with this bed. It comes in attractive colors including, a muted plain gray or a patterned blue. Of all the Kirkland Signature collection beds, though, this one seems a bit overpriced to us.

Cleaning and Durability

As we couldn’t test Kirkland dog beds for long-range durability, we did quite a bit of research on feedback from other customers. The consensus is that these beds seem to hold up pretty darn well even after a year or two.

We didn’t see any loose stitching or fabric issues. Some of the models can be slightly frustrating to assemble. But once you’re used to the process, it’s easy to take off the cover and throw it in the washing machine. Be sure to flat or air dry, though, before you put everything back together.

Warranties and Policies

Whether you buy a Kirkland dog bed online or in a Costco location, you can return it to one of 800 global warehouses if you’re not satisfied. So, if you buy one that your dog doesn’t love as much as you do, you can bring it back as long as it’s in good condition.

Contact Costco for issues involving manufacturer defects, and a customer service representative will fill you in on the return or exchange process.
